Riders of Destiny
Societal Structure: Family
Cultural Qualities: Due to the very specialized nature of herding Aurochs the Ull treat the Bolas, Lassos, and Whips as martial weapons. They also treat any bladed weapon with a size category of one-handed or larger as exotic.
Specialized Equipment: Ull Saddle – The cost and weight of this saddle are the same as a military saddle but instead of the usual +2 to ride checks, the distinctive large horn grants the rider a +2 to any trip attempt made with a lasso while mounted.
Favored Horse Breed: Quarter Horse
The Ull are a hard working and hard partying group of people. They derive almost all of their livelihood from the breeding and sale of Aurochs. The Ull drive these animals seasonally to graze on the grassy plains and to markets in Tusmit, Zeif, Ekbir, and Ket. From Ket to they are sometimes taken even farther east.
In the grazing season in years past the Ull have run afoul of the Paynim by trying to graze in the same place as the native bison. For the most part the Ull now keep to their own territory. Most of the Aurochs are owned by a few powerful families and since almost all wealth is either gained directly from it or from a business that relies on it, society is beholden to these families. In the towns there are elected officials but everyone knows that the real power are the men at the heads of the few families.
Auroch rustling is a lucrative but dangerous business since most buyers don’t care who they buy from. The punishment for being caught is summary execution and so known rustlers take great care not to get caught.
In their spare time the Ull spend time gambling, womanizing and drinking. Most of which results in fighting which they also revel in. Riding herd on Aurochs requires a sturdy horse that is fast over short distances. The Ull combine this desirable working trait with their love of gambling and now have a fairly consistent sport of racing their horses over a quarter-mile racetrack.
The Ull tend towards tanned skin and light to dark brown hair. Men wear cotton or wool pants and shirts, hard leather boots, and if they ride leather chaps. Women usually wear simple dresses as they go about their day. Due to spending most of their day in the out of doors most Ull wear wide brimmed hats, and often form an unnatural attachment to them.
